Sometime All You Need to Hear is “Thank You”!

Tara Dixon is the Owner/Artist of Gratitude Designs by Tara

Hometown: New York, NY

When and how did you discover your passion?

I have been a painter and an artist as long as I can remember. I have a vivid memory of standing before an easel in nursery school probably at the age of three and dipping a paint brush is a pot of red paint and another into a pot of white paint and blending them together feeling as if I had invented the color pink!

I had made forty paintings with the words “thank you” etched in them after my husband of eighteen years and I separated. At that point, I realized that I had made a “gratitude series.” I was grateful for our time together. He he always been supportive throughout our separation, with raising our son and with my art. Gratitude Designs by Tara Dixon was born six months later.

What has been your biggest obstacle you’ve faced in pursuing your passion?

Endurance has been my biggest obstacle. Sustaining my belief in my dream and hanging in there before things started to happen.

What was the determining factor for you to step out full-time with your Passion?

The realization that the only way for this to take off is by jumping in with both feet.

What the best advise you ever received?

To just say, “YES” and then figure it out after.

What has been your biggest motivation?

The increasing cost of my studio space and my desire to help send my son to college.

How do you to deal with adversity?

Believe it or not, by writing gratitudes.

How do you give back?

Dirty brushes on a clean face equals pimples galore, right? Right.

Don’t forget to clean your make-up brushes on a regular, ladies. This is a task that I have never really been good at, but I’m getting better. In between clean-ups, I like to use baby wipes or make-up wipes.

I just discovered “Pin Curling” my hair as a way of setting it up for the desired look I want to achieve. The results are just what I was looking for, soft curls that have bounce with a bit of control for shaping. Overall I love the flexibility I have with this technique.

“If it feels good, do it and if it doesn’t feel good, don’t do it!”

I’ve heard this saying many times but it wasn’t until recently that I realized what it truly meant. Growing up I was under the impression that my feelings didn’t matter, that I just had to do things regardless of how they made me think or feel. I dealt with my feelings this way for so long that I began to think that if it didn’t feel good then somehow it was the best because it was building my character.

Even though I grew up for many years thinking that my true feelings didn’t really matter and that I had no control over my circumstances, I always felt deep down inside that there had to be more, that there was a huge piece of the puzzle missing. I have always been intrigued with understanding different personality types and self-help. Before the Internet, I would go to the public libraries and book stores to find any information that would bring me one step closer to making sense of my true feelings and actions.

After years of soul searching, 2006 became a huge turning point in my life. I made some bold and courageous executive decisions. First, I realized that the religion I grew up trusting and believing in was not giving me what I needed to be a well rounded and most of all a happy and joyous person. So I moved on from it. Then I reluctantly accepted an invitation to attend a financial seminar that changed my entire outlook toward money and business, and received a popular DVD that helped me understand the “Laws of Attraction”.

I viewed that DVD no fewer than 20 times, learning something new each and every time I watched. There was one part in particular that jumped directly into my heart and soul; I connected with it immediately. The presenter said that we all have an “Emotional Guidance System.”

She said that no matter what we call certain feelings, there are only two basic human emotions: one feels good and one feels bad. In the most simplistic terms, your emotional guidance system acts like a compass that will let you know if what you are going toward will make you happy or unhappy in the end. She continued to say that if what you are going toward feels good, then you should continue on that path. And the opposite is true: If what you are going towards does not feel good then that is a clear indication that what you are going toward will bring you unhappiness.

WOW. What a huge light bulb moment for me. I couldn’t believe that all my years of confusion, worry, doubt and fears were answered with this simple explanation. It made complete sense to me and most of all it validated my feelings. From that point on I began to give myself permission to trust what I was feeling.

I am learning to listen to my inner voice, no matter how soft or how loud it may be. When I have done so, I have had the best outcomes. When I haven’t, it served as a reminder to always trust my instincts because they will NEVER fail me.

Taking Care of Our Children Through Literacy!

Ty Jackson is an Author and Publisher of Children’s Books

Big Head Books started in March, 2010 and “Danny Dollar” was published in December, 2010.

Hometown: Bronx, NY

When and how did you discover your passion?

I discovered my passion very late in life. It is wonderful how life really is what you make of it. At age 40 I was in corporate sales and completely miserable. Having never pursed my dream of becoming a doctor I was frustrated that I was “stuck” in a career that gave me no joy. One day my best friend and I were talking about how to empower our culture through finance. Knowing that it is easier to reach children than adults I created a character that was fun, cool, and intelligent with a strong work ethic thus Danny Dollar was born. Writing the story was so inspiring and fulfilling to me that I knew this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.

But it wasn’t until I wrote my second children’s book, “When I Close My Eyes” that I quit my corporate job and became an author and publisher full time.

What has been your biggest obstacle you’ve faced in pursuing your passion?

I had no literary experience when I started writing my first book. After it’s completion I pushed it to over 150 agents to get it published. All rejected me. Many things went through my mind: I wasn’t smart enough; my book wasn’t good enough, etc. But in my heart I knew that my book was special and I was not going to let anyone, including myself, get in the way. Indeed, conquering my own fears and insecurities was my biggest obstacle, but not anymore. Now you can’t tell me there isn’t anything I can’t do. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE because IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING!

What was the determining factor for you to step into your passion full-time?

Confidence within myself. I have never failed in anything I believed in and I know I was not going to fail at this. Although I am new and inexperienced in the literary world, I use that as an advantage. I don’t follow the rules because I don’t know the rules. It sounds crazy but my success has come from being unconventional. I have used my confidence and naive unconventional nature to get myself and my brand noticed.

What the best advice you ever received?

It was through the spirit of my 21 year old brother who lied in a casket after being shot and killed in a senseless act of violence hours after receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Buffalo University. As I looked down at him, so young, so full of potential and opportunities in life, I could hear him say to me words that I have heard before, but have taken for granted: “TOMORROW IS NOT PROMISED”.

From that moment I knew my absolute goal was to aggressively purse my dreams because tomorrow is not promised to anyone.

How do you give back?

I have given back by donating hundreds of books to churches, organizations and homeless shelters that couldn’t afford to purchase them. I have also made appearances at several organizations to speak and mentor to kids that otherwise may not have had the chance to speak to an author without charging a fee. I am also on the Board of Directors of a non-profit organization, The Christian Center, that feeds, clothes and shelters the less fortunate in my community.

Why pursue your passion?

Personally, for over 40 years I did not know what I wanted to do with my life. I was so scared that I was going to die with my song still in me. Now that I know who and what I am, I wake up everyday eager to let the world know my books exist. Socially, we live in a culture where children of color are in a downward spiral. There seems to be very little ambition and drive from our young people. Today’s kids live in the world of instant gratification. My books show children the power of using their imagination and working hard to achieve their dreams.

PEOPLE WHO HAVE INSPIRED ME

My mother Diane Brown, Activist Malcolm X, Author Richard Wright, Editor Susan L. Taylor, Entrepreneur Farrah Gray, Entrepreneur Russell Simmons, Chef Jeff Henderson, Starbucks CEO Howard Shultz, TV One Founder Cathy Hughes
